Oh, the places you’ll have been

‘Congratulations! Today is your day.
You’re off to Great Places! You’re off and away!’

To our future little one,

First, a promise. We want you to know that no matter how many hours of sleep you deprive us of, no matter how many tantrums you throw to get your way, no matter how moody (and probably rude, let’s face it) a teenager you are at times, we will never guilt trip you with the temping line ‘do you have any idea what it took us* to bring you into this world?!?’.

*And whilst by ‘us’ we mean your two loving dads who worked very hard to create this family, let’s make sure that we all never forget that it pales in comparison to the special lady who carried you for 9 months. That’s not something your dads will ever be able to comprehend, so we’ll just make a pact to do our very best as we navigate raising you with boundless gratitude, compassion, and respect.

Even though the road to bring you here was no doubt a bumpy one at times, we keep telling ourselves how lucky we are to get to share all of this with you one day and how lucky you are to have had so many people care about you enough well before anyone got the chance to meet you. We hope to enrich your life with experiences you will love, but so few come into the world having already been far and wide. Key ingredients for your creation originated in Melbourne, Australia and Edmonton, Canada. There were even stop-overs in New Zealand, Hawaii and San Diego before all ingredients were combined in Toronto, Canada where you endured a pretty cold climate for some time (note – at the time of writing you were still in said climate, but we’re pretty hopeful it won’t be for much longer). As we were so keen to meet you as quickly as we could, we even talked to some great people in other parts of the world about whether they could help you out…and, who knows, down the track there might be yet another destination on your journey…we’ll just wait and see, but you’ve continent hopped more than most and you’re just a 5 day old embryo as we write this, which is pretty impressive.

Whenever your dads have felt a bit down about how long it will have taken to finally meet you, we remind ourselves how special it is for you to have all of this as part of your story. We are so going to encourage (maybe even demand) that you brag about it to your friends some day.

The funny thing is, most people probably think your dads are kidding themselves if they think the road is bumpy now…many will say just wait until you’re here! And that’s probably very true. Maybe you planned this all along? Maybe you took your time to get here to give your dads a sense of perspective around the struggles we’ll face? Maybe not. But we love you already and can’t wait to ride along the continual bumpy road with you here in person.

All our love,
Your very excited dads xxx

  2. Hello you two.

What a bumpy road – complete with intersections, potholes, road blocks and occasionally lush country vistas. I’ve been holding my breath since first reading the October update. There is still such a way to go for you all.
So let’s be patient and hopeful and excited with what might be. What will be is clear – loving parents on a lifelong journey. What might be is the detail and that’s the weft and warp of your particular tapestry.

I think you are both amazing – resilient and determined and of course you will be the best parents you can be. Your little person will be loved by so many and will grow up in a village of people who care about you all.
But for now, we’re all holding our breath, waiting, hoping, sending strength and patience to you both. What a bumpy road you are on!
